The MGM Grand Group and Marketing the Experience

Most people go to Vegas expecting to lose some money and hoping it lasts long enough to say they had a good time.  There are also some amazing shows there that you won’t really have an opportunity to see anywhere else.

But, unless you pay attention to the digital ads at the airport, on all the digital marquees in front of the casinos or on the trucks driving around you, may never realize that there is more to Vegas than casinos on The Strip or Fremont Street.  There are many fun and exciting activities to do outside of the casino floor, even outside of the casinos.  One can even get discounts for many of these attractions by looking around online or using the Las Vegas Pass.

Walking around Las Vegas you will see many people with their phones out taking videos and pictures and posting to their own social media sites.  This word of mouth advertising is perfect for the big casinos.  These casinos drive experiences.  And more than a gambling experience, but experiences for all ages and interests.  The way they get the word out is through re-posting what the consumers are posting as social media posts, pov videos, and images.

The MGM Hotel Group which owns all of the properties in this review have done a great job getting the word out on social media.  This has been a focus for them over the past four years with a strategy that was formed by Nick Mattera, who oversees all of Social Media Marketing for the MGM group.

To learn more about Mattera’s strategy, check out this link: Social Media and the MGM Resorts

“The best thing we can do is try to understand what the consumer wants. Whether you come to Las Vegas or not, if we can serve you an ad or content that makes sense to you, that’s a good experience. Creating the positive experience is important for us.” – Nick Mattera

One of the things that the MGM Resorts have understood is that everyone doesn’t want to be in the casino all the time.  They have been able to create and sell experiences that gambler and thrill seeker alike will enjoy.  Here are the top 5 that we found:

1. The Big Apple Coaster, New York New York

The roller coaster at the New York New York is pretty amazing, and they will let you ride a repeat time for half price as soon as you’re done. It is fast, with twists and turns and loop the loops.  This roller coaster is great during the day to look out on the city of Las Vegas as well as the desert surroundings.  It is even better at night.  The twists and turns are more exciting and the lights of the strip are quite a sight.  Now they have even added a Virtual Reality experience to the ride giving you a chance to shoot aliens who have escaped from a nearby research facility as they fly over the Strip.

(This one is pretty loud, maybe turn your volume down)

2. VR Gaming, MGM Grand

If you don’t want to walk through the casino to get to the KidZone area for video games, head on over to the MGM Grand on the ground floor (street level).  Walk right in and you’ll run into their VR Gaming area.  There you will find the LEVEL UP gaming lounge where you can spend some quality time gaming and imbibing while waiting for your turn.  You will want to wait for your spot.  Please try this out.  For $50, you will get 30 minutes of VR play time with a group of up to 8 players.

There are four different scenarios you can go through and I am sure they are all just as fun:

  • “Zombie Survival – The team is trapped in a zombie apocalypse, with the undead lurking around every corner ready to attack. Armed with a comprehensive arsenal of weapons, survivors must band together to take down wave after wave of zombies and rebuild safety barriers before extraction by the rescue team.
  • Singularity – Something has gone wrong in a secretive military research space station. While investigating the mystery, teams must battle rogue robots and killer drones through narrow corridors and the zero-gravity environment of space.
  • Engineerium – This puzzle adventure is set in a fantastical world with flying whales, giant parrots and colorful creatures. Players of all ages are challenged to solve physics-based problems as a team to advance along floating platforms high above the exotic planet below.
  • Outbreak Origins – A deadly virus is wreaking havoc on the human population, creating hordes of zombies that are taking over the cities. Your squad needs to do something quick! The dead are walking and a sinister new order is rising from the ashes. Rescue and Attack helicopters buzz overhead, guns ablaze. Amongst all the chaos is a shadow group that seems to be at the root of the outbreak. Who are they? Arm yourself with a variety of weapons; assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles and take advantage of more powerful weapons on your mission to find a cure. Prepare yourself for epic battles…”

(Video of Zero Latency experience in Singapore, which is the same as the MGM experience)

In each game you will get about 15 minutes of instruction on how to use the VR system and get used to the environment with the goggles and headphones on.  Then you walk into a large empty room.  30 minutes of walking around the space, killing zombies, and jeering your friends for having to re-spawn goes quickly.  Knowing it is an empty room is no help as the experience really messes with your head.  You will still hug walls as you walk “up” ramps on the side of a building or jump over a “gap” as you are getting onto a helicopter.  This is an amazing experience and I recommend it for anyone who enjoys gaming and wants to get away while in Vegas.

3. Shark Reef Aquarium, Mandalay Bay

Also on the South end of The Strip is the shark reef aquarium at the Mandalay Bay.  This is also an amazing experience.  You can interact with the animals in a couple of different ways.  There are feeding experiences with stingrays, sea turtles, and sharks as well as an amazing dive with the sharks.

Diving with sharks can get a little spendy.  But, Come On!  How many people can say that they were in the water with sharks on purpose?!  This is a 3-4 hour experience where you get to spend time with the largest concentration of more than 30 different kinds of sharks.  Plus you get up to 4 of your friends who are too scared to climb into the tank free admission to watch you be a fool around a bunch of blood thirsty sharks.

4. Adventuredome, Circus Circus

Moving onto the north end of The Strip there are two key casinos to hit up for some action.  The first is Circus Circus.  While this hotel and casino is more well known as the place you stay with kids in tow, it also has one or two pretty exciting rides for the adult crowd.

Image result for AdventuredomeOne of these is the Canyon Blaster roller coaster.  On this ride you will get up to 55 mph on the worlds only indoor roller coaster with a double loop and double corkscrew.  This ride takes you through the Adventuredome past all the rest of the people on the Midway.  It is quite an experience!

5.  Thrill Rides, Stratosphere

Finally, there is the Stratosphere.  Here you get to experience Las Vegas’s highest amusement park.  There are 3 rides and one not to be missed experience at the Stratosphere.

Photo of Big Shot, Insanity and X-Scream thrill rides

The first is the Big Shot where you get blasted 160 ft. straight up into the air above the tallest casino in Vegas.  If that isn’t a thrill enough for you, you can try out Insanity.  On this ride, you sit in a chair that is attached to an arm that rotates out over the strip, 900 ft over the strip.  Then it starts to rotate and the chairs swing out, and up, until you are looking straight down, 900 ft, to the little ants of people walking below you.  Don’t worry.  I only saw this break down once, or twice while I lived there.  I’m sure all those kinks have been worked out.  Finally, there is the X-Scream.  This is another short thrill, but you will catapult headfirst 27 ft over the edge of the tower and dangle weightlessly for a bit before being snapped back for another go.

The last, but definitely not least thing to do at the Stratosphere is the SkyJump Las Vegas.  Here you bungee jump off of the top of the Stratosphere and free fall a very long way before you are lowered to the landing pad on street level.

You can book either day or night activities for any of these activities giving a very different outdoor Las Vegas experience.

5 Ways to Happily Mismanage Your Life

The world is filled with feel-good, optimistic approaches on how to establish a good lifestyle and improve yourself. This is not one of those … welcome to the dark side.
Whether you are student, working in a office or managing your personal life, below are some of the best ways to mismanage your life and be totally happy doing it.
1. Distract yourself
Internet and smart phones have brought the power to transform the world anytime and from anywhere into your palm.  If you are comfortable in your job/relationship already, you may want to seriously consider distracting yourself with as many gadgets and apps.  After all, there will always be another job tomorrow somewhere, but the latest viral news/post will be lost in the landfill of internet any minute.  Focus is overrated, go ahead and refresh.
2. Overspend your earnings
Saving for retirement is great only if you want all the resources at a time when you are physically incapable of enjoying anything those resources could buy.  The experience of enjoying your dream vacations in your youth in worth a lifetime of debt.  Go ahead and take that vacation on credit.
3. Aim for instant gratification
Successful people are able to deal with contradiction by doing what is necessary to resolve issues or, at least, neutralize it.  If you are turned off by the significant planning and thoughtful execution of tasks this mandates, then give into temptation and relish short-term rewards at the expense of long-term benefits.  No one knows what surprises tomorrow will bring.  Go ahead and enjoy everything now.
4. Become complacent
If you do not like your views to be challenged, then going to school is the best way to waste valuable years of your life.  Technology is evolving faster than humans.  Being unwilling to learn new skills may be the quickest way to make yourself worthless in the modern economy.  Even in personal relationships, unwillingness to keep the spark alive is the sure shot way to a long singles lifestyle. Put on those pajamas and get too comfortable.
5. Wreck personal connections
If you know that you are the better half, then separating yourself from the pesky human connections grounding you to reality may be your most gratifying decision.  Free your unique ideas from the grind of thoughtful collaborative team work.  Who needs allies when you are perfect … make yourself great again!

8 things we learned from writing digital marketing blogs

1. Social Media presence and experience

Prior to writing a blog online, it is important to have some experience with social media platforms. Each social media platform is leveraged in a different way (Reddit vs. Twitter vs. Facebook as examples). It is a good idea to have existing social media accounts and access to existing online social networks.  More importantly, ensure you understand how audiences on each platform might react to your content and promotional efforts. A Reddit user may be more likely to engage with a targeted and specific post curated for their interests while a Facebook friend may be more likely to engage on broader messages in support of the friend’s blog.

2. Social Media strategy is key

As you head down the exciting path of writing a blog, it is important to not only have a content strategy, but also have a promotional strategy. The content strategy should outline the types of topics to write about and the social media platforms on which to post. A promotional strategy should identify the intended audiences  and how you expect to reach them via the social platforms.

As you develop your plan for building a great social media marketing blog, be thoughtful about your posting cadence (posting twice a week is a good start) and your subsequent promotional strategy (promote heavily immediately after you post to ensure your fresh content is delivered on time).

Without an initial strategy that outlines the topics of interest, the frequency of the posts, the promotional campaigns, and the target audiences, you may find it challenging to get enough people reading, following, sharing, liking and talking about your posts.

3. Identify a topic

Invest the time to identify a topic that is not only interesting to write about but also provides a connection to an attentive audience.   While you may think you have a great idea for your blog, if there aren’t enough people interested in the content you may not get anyone to read it.

4. Understand various blog types and select one

Before writing a blog, it is important to understand the various blog types such as: Listicle, Click Bait, Op Ed, or a Product Review. Once the blog types and formats are understood, you should then select the appropriate format for the topic.  For example, you can write a product review on something of interest and relevance to you as the writer.  This will result in more honest and engaging content that can serve to connect with a targeted audience.  Another approach is to choose a topic that is of interest to the intended audience.  You may decide that a Click Bait post with nostalgic images or humorous content may be an easier way to promote to a broader audience as a means to drive traffic to your blog.

5. Writing a blog can be time consuming

Don’t underestimate the amount of time it takes to research, write, review and edit a blog before posting it.  To demonstrate this, consider a blog that includes original video content.  While videos can be an effective way to drive traffic and session duration, they are also very time consuming to produce.  Effective videos require frequent editing, re-shoots, voice over sessions, more editing and then copy overlay.  Finally, you put it all together, post it to your site and promote it to the masses.  While it can be fun, don’t underestimate the time commitment needed to pull it off!

6. Find audiences to drive traffic

With so many different channels available, deciding on the right platforms for promoting your message is an integral step in a successful campaign.  Email, Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, Instagram and Tumbler are a just a few of the options available and all have may seem to have benefits.

You might think that email is a great channel for promotion because you have lots of friends and family interested in your content.  However, you may find that people often don’t read blogs in their email as frequently as they check their Facebook, Twitter or Instagram accounts.

The trick is finding the right social media platform and the right audience to post and promote your blog.

7. Leverage Google Analytics

Through Google Analytics, identify the key metrics that allow you to monitor your blog site’s performance and measure how well you are reaching the intended audience. Some examples of effective metrics include: number of sessions, bounce rate, average session and duration. Number of sessions measures the number of visitors to your site or campaign (i.e how effectively are you driving traffic).  Average session duration provides you with a measurement of how long on average people are viewing your blogs (i.e is your content interesting to the reader). Bounce rate represents the action of leaving the site immediately after clicking on a campaign (i.e is your content relevant to the visitor).  To measure how effectively your targeted audience is engaging with your blog, you want your bounce rate to be as low as possible.

8. Adjust your approach if it doesn’t drive enough traffic

There are times when it seems like the topic is relevant to many audiences and the execution of the promotional strategy seems correct. However, something didn’t work. It could have been an issue with the blog title, the blog content, the target audience or the promotion. When this occurs, you have an opportunity to make adjustments to the blog, the social media platform and/or the promotional campaign to a more appropriate audience.  If you can learn from your missteps and quickly address any issues, you can develop into a more effective social media marketing blogger.

Good Luck!

Lessons we learned from real life experience in the social media world

Timing – Posting/Sharing the article at the best times will help you get more traffic and engagement. Factoring in the time zones of the target audience definitely helps.

Content Translation – If you want your message to reach a wider audience, a proper translation to native language is a good strategy. Two of our articles have a Thai translation version and it reaches to a handful of a unique audience in Thailand.

The Length of Stay – If we reach the right group of audience, their length of stay on the page tend to be longer as they spend time reading the article.

The length and the content of the post itself matter in attracting more audience. Who wants to read a long post about boring subjects?

Advertising for the articles – When you try to engage the audience with a sneak peak of the content in the post text they would be more engaged and click the link.

Funny and catchy titles get more engagement than the serious ones – even if the subject is not very interesting for your audience, you should create a title that makes them at least smile in order to make them click on the link.

Original content is a key for engagement – for example, creating the video with original ideas and scenes attract people more because they know they will see something new and different from other social media contents.

Targeting closest friends and family is the easiest form of spreading information – the larger the group working on the project or post, the more seeds you have to pump out information. For example, Willamette University students were engaging well with the content because they are in our community.

Graphics such as gifs or movies help adding some content to the articles that can increase visitors time spent on the website.

Social Media: Are We Living in the Twilight Zone?

Many of us remember the Twilight Zone as offering a glimpse into a society much like our own, but wherein something eerie casts a shadow over the seemingly pleasant facade of society.

Naturally, fans of the series were ecstatic when British television series announced it would be releasing a similar anthology series entitled Black Mirror

The third season plunged right in with their debut episode “Nose Dive.” “Nose Dive,” tells the story of a young woman named Lacie living in a society very much like our own where individuals rate every interaction they have with one another on a five-star system simply by pointing it at them. One’s cumulative score is used to determine where you may live, what jobs you may have, and what transportation you have access to.

After viewing this episode I was struck by the realization that to a lesser extent we are already living in a society fueled by ratings and limited interactions. Have we fully entered the Twilight Zone? No, but we may be farther down the path than we realize.

In the wake of the United States Presidental election, there was a clamoring on Facebook of people unfriending those with dissenting political views. When those with contradictory views are removed you are left with a small contained bubble of individuals who all share the same beliefs and values. Individuals also self-select their communities based on the content they prefer to see and the content they don’t.

When there is no differentiation of opinions, and no questioning of the information being presented the result is an overwhelmingly strong subconscious desire to conform. What is created is a bubble of confirmation bias which is then fueled by the social media platform. Similarly to the tradition of the media deciding which information to convey and at what time, Facebook also decides which content each individual sees and when. Facebook perpetuates the confirmation bias through the use of targeted marketing based on the networks of like-minded individuals in a person’s profile.

Social media has captured immeasurable audience interest from users to non-users alike since the earliest sites were launched. In recent years a new Twilight Zone-esque trend has been rising, the trend of the pretty girl who makes money by posting pictures on Instagram.

Once upon a time, the majority of product and brand ambassadors were varying levels of celebrity. Post-Twilight Zone, all one needs in order to become an ambassador is a sizeable number of Instagram followers and the ability to take flattering and or sexy photos with said products.

The general logic behind these campaigns is simple to follow. How do you get your product a wider or more targetted audience? Give your product to a few people with sizeable Instagram followers and ask them to review your product. In an age where the new cool thing is to be authentic, brands recognize that an “average” girl may be able to better influence her peers than say, Selena Gomez.

On the surface, this logic is straightforward and seems like a reasonable avenue to increased sales, but what are the underlying implications?  In the new age of Instagram ambassadors, brands are relying on the fact that consumers are drawn to the authenticity of the ambassador, their popularity, and the idea that with enough work someday they could be in their shoes.

The paradox here is that brands are hinging their marketing plans on the authenticity of a platform which by societal design only showcases the rosy aspects of an “authentic” life. With everyone online and the ability to view anyone’s profile, there is a heightened desire to only put forth what and how you want the world to see you. With this level of ingenuity, how can any interactions on such a platform be judged as authentic?

In the digital age of social media, we have created a society where individuals are only part of like-minded groups, information is tailored to the individual based on what they want to see, and our “authentic” lives are nothing more than shadows behind popularity filters and the idea of a “perfect” life. When taken in this context, one must ask, are we living in the Twilight Zone already?

Self Promotion Tips from a Kardashian

Social media and Kardashians go together like peanut butter and jelly, and their social media presence has contributed significantly to their success in connecting with and growing their audiences. So, what exactly is it about their media postings that gain so much attention?

Here are the 5 things they’re doing right:

1. Locate your audience

For Kim, Khloe, Kourtney, Kylie and Kendall their audiences are primarily on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. However, look at the demographics and engagement levels on each of these platforms and determine if they are worth the time and investment if your audience is not actively engaged.

2. Don’t just post about yourself

Looking at the Kardashian Clan’s social media presence, their posts are related to news articles, new or upcoming product launches, and promoting shared interests (such as fitness, shopping or makeup). Given that your audience may not want to see 4-5 posts daily of selfies, provide content that may be a shared interest between you and the audience.

3. Link your profiles together

Ensure your audience can follow you on all channels, so link and display your snapchat username to your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages and visa versa. By allowing followers to choose their favorite form of social media, it increases awareness and the odds of having consistent engagement.

4. Be platform specific

Ensure that if you have followers on all your social media sites, they are not seeing the same content. Mix it up a little and post different content on different sites!

5. Find your voice

The Kardashians are not afraid to post a meme about themselves or each other, as long as it follows their voice. Find the voice for your company, and post content according to your values.

In the end, these 5 tips from the Kardashians will help you utilize social media for your business (or your personal profile), but no guarantee that you’ll gain 88.9 million followers. That kind of social media fame is reserved for dedicated selfie celebrities.
